Privacy Policy

Livalingo helps you learn a language by reading the news. This page explains what we collect, why we need it, who else sees it, and how to get rid of it. We have tried to write it in the plainest language we can.

Who we are

Livalingo (“we”) operates livalingo.com. For any privacy question, or to exercise any of the rights below, write to hello@livalingo.com.

What we collect

Account details. Your email address, and — if you sign in with Google — the name and profile picture on your Google account. We never receive your Google password.

Your learning profile. The language you speak, the language you are learning, your level, the topics you pick, your daily goal, preferred reading time, time zone and theme. This is what decides which version of an article you are shown, so the app does not work without it.

Your activity. Which articles you open and how far you read, the words you save, how you grade them in review, your streak, and quiz answers. This drives your review schedule and your progress screens.

Subscription status. Whether you are on the free tier or Plus, when your subscription renews, and a reference number from our payment processor. We never see or store your card number.

Notifications. If you turn on the daily reminder, the push subscription your browser generates for this device.

Technical logs. Our servers record requests, including IP address, for security and debugging — for example to rate-limit sign-in attempts. These are kept short-term and are not used to build a profile of you.

What we do not collect

We do not use advertising trackers or third-party analytics, we do not sell or rent your data to anyone, and we do not build advertising profiles. There is no advertising in Livalingo.

Cookies

We use two, both strictly necessary: a session cookie that keeps you signed in, and a CSRF cookie that stops other sites from acting on your behalf. There are no advertising or analytics cookies, which is why you are not being asked to accept anything.

Who else sees your data

Livalingo relies on a small number of services to work:

• Google — only if you choose to sign in with Google, which confirms your identity to us.
• OpenAI — adapts news articles to your level and generates the audio narration. We send the article text and your level and language settings. We do not send your name, email, or account identifier.
• Cloudflare — stores the generated audio files and our backups.
• Hetzner — hosts our servers, in Helsinki, Finland.
• Our payment processor — handles the card transaction if you subscribe and confirms the result to us.
• News sources and news APIs — where the articles come from. Nothing about you is sent to them.

Adapted articles and audio are cached and shared between everyone reading at the same level and language pairing. That cache holds article content only — never anything about who requested it.

Where your data lives

Our servers are in Finland, and our backups and audio files are held by Cloudflare. Some of the services listed above process data outside the country you are in.

How long we keep it

Your account data is kept for as long as your account exists. Delete your account and your profile, saved words, review history and reading activity are removed. Cached articles and audio remain, because they contain no personal data and are shared by every learner at that level. Backups roll off after 30 days. Technical logs are short-lived.

Your rights

You can see and change your profile in Settings, and you can delete your account from Settings at any time — this is immediate and permanent, not a request queued for review. You may also ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or object to how we use it, by writing to hello@livalingo.com.

Children

Livalingo is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

Security

Traffic is encrypted with HTTPS, passwords are stored hashed, sign-in and account endpoints are rate-limited, and access to production is restricted. No system is perfectly secure, but we treat your data as though it matters, because it does.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that materially affects you, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
